HISTORY
The Legacy of Brenda Mavis Key
The Brenda Key School of Dance was founded in 1972 by Brenda Mavis Key, a professional ballerina, renowned ballet teacher, and distinguished examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance. For over 50 years, the school has proudly served the local community, operating from its original home at The Bourne Methodist Church in Southgate.
As a dancer, Brenda Key trained under celebrated teachers such as Ruth French and Phyllis Bedells, and she went on to enjoy a highly successful performing career. Following her time on stage, she qualified as an RAD examiner and travelled extensively, assessing ballet students around the world. Her final international trip taking her to Brazil before she retired from examining in 1990.
Upon retiring from her professional career, Miss Key, affectionately known to her students, established her own school, driven by a passion for dance and a commitment to excellence. She instilled strong values of discipline, artistry, and determination in every student, always striving to bring out the best in those she taught. Her dedication made a lasting impact on generations of dancers and on the wider community.
Brenda Key passed away in 2013, but her legacy lives on through the school she built with pride. Her spirit continues to inspire every teacher and student who walks through its doors, keeping her vision alive: to nurture, challenge, and celebrate every dancer.
